Campaign Zero
Public data and accountability
About this project
For years, public data on police behavior in California has sat unused and in a less-than-digestible format. Campaign Zero approached me with the desire to bring these data sets to life. With the intention to expand the scorecard to other states as well as represent all police depts in CA, the challenge was to create a flexible framework that was easy to navigate with the current data but could also be expanded as more data becomes available. I first developed a more concrete information architecture using four distinct user personas and their expected flows. From there, I developed wireframes to allow for optimum use of the main product, the data visualizations, creating palatable conclusions within each department and subsection to allow for the best absorption of data. For the interface, we worked with a lightened palette and patterns to provide some relief in the density of data. The conclusion of this single-scroll site lists steps for action, information on the continuation of the project, and further information on data collection for the more data-minded. The project is already well-received and being used as a resource for activists, politicos, media members, and data professionals alike.
